It’s not a Map Editor, it’s a Game Engine

I’m not all that excited about Starcraft 2. From the little I played, I’m just thinking right now it’s too much of a wait for too little of a change. 12 years for that, Blizzard? Really? Talk about a slippery slope!

And that comes from a guy that played thousands of hours of the first Starcraft. At some point, my whole life was driven by this game: my friends, my job, my girlfriend, they all came from playing it way too much. I know many are into SC2, starting with my mates dotsMarc and Khao, but it just hasn’t it me so far.

Or wait, maybe it just did, very recently and from another angle, when I discovered gameplay videos of what some people out there are doing with the Galaxy Editor. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a tool that’s built in the game that lets anyone create their own maps. Or should I say their own games, rather?

The possibilities seem to be very many. I picked some of the best stuff that I’ve seen on Youtube, it’s right below.

My favorite game of the past few years, DotA, was born from the Warcraft 3 World Editor, a very limited tool in comparison with the new Galaxy Editor. Now that we’re only a few weeks into the beta testing, I wouldn’t be surprised if I found myself playing a SC2 powered game built by some lonely guy in their garage in a couple years from now.
