Top 10 RTS Games Ever

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Two days before the most awaited release of a PC game ever, well at least in my view that’s what StarCraft 2 stands for, let’s take a look at the Gamocracy all-time rankings for the RTS genre.

1- Company of Heroes – 9.3/10
2- Starcraft: Brood War – 9.2/10
3- Starcraft – 8.9/10
4- Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos – 8.8/10
5- Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne – 8.8/10
6- Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 – 8.5/10
7- Defcon – 8/10
8- Supreme Commander – 7.1/10
9- Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – 7/10
10- Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath – 6.3/10

oooohh look at that, the same ranking in a visually attractive way
find out how the ranking is determined

Surprise, surprise, it’s not a Blizzard game at the top. I never tried Company of Heroes! Maybe I will after all. And… where the hell is Warcraft 2?

If, like me, you think this ranking needs improvement, join in and let the world know better.

I’ll be on the Champs Elysées for the midnight launch on Monday night. And if you’re looking for me, who knows, I’ll be the big guy with a beard throwing Gamocracy cards all over.

It’s not a Map Editor, it’s a Game Engine

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

I’m not all that excited about Starcraft 2. From the little I played, I’m just thinking right now it’s too much of a wait for too little of a change. 12 years for that, Blizzard? Really? Talk about a slippery slope!

And that comes from a guy that played thousands of hours of the first Starcraft. At some point, my whole life was driven by this game: my friends, my job, my girlfriend, they all came from playing it way too much. I know many are into SC2, starting with my mates dotsMarc and Khao, but it just hasn’t it me so far.

Or wait, maybe it just did, very recently and from another angle, when I discovered gameplay videos of what some people out there are doing with the Galaxy Editor. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a tool that’s built in the game that lets anyone create their own maps. Or should I say their own games, rather?

The possibilities seem to be very many. I picked some of the best stuff that I’ve seen on Youtube, it’s right below.

Joshua Rubin co-wrote Assassin’s Creed 2

Assassin's Creed 2 on GamocracyThis week I interviewed the co-writer of Assassin’s Creed 2, Joshua Rubin. Joining me was a fan of the game from Egypt, Karim Ayman Youssef. I had also picked a couple questions asked by other fans on Facebook.

Some of the stuff we talked about…

  • how the Hollywood movie making crowd is awed that’s he’s working on video games
  • the possibility of an Assassin’s Creed movie
  • how the young DaVinci from the game could be an ancestor to Bond’s Q
  • “it was great fun to design the beating of the ****.” (spoilers inside, be warned)

BF Bad Company Music Composer: The Man Also Does Ballet

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Yesterday, R4VI4TOR, GODJonez and I got online with Mikael Karlsson for…

Wait! I still don’t know if I should call it an interview or a chat. It’s a bit of both… “Interchat”?! How does that sound? Having “chat” in a name is hot these days, ain’t it?

Anyway… For one hour, Mikael told us how he ended up composing the music for Bad Company, about his experiments with indie game devs, where the massive Aurora in-game sound is coming from and the many other projects he’s been juggling with: besides Battlefield music, the man also does ballet.

The Good Company of Mikael Karlsson

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Walking through the campus, Mikael stops suddenly. It’s effing cold. Why!?

He’s pointing in a direction. At his fingertips, afar, Manhattan’s tall buildings are hiding part of the sky. “Isn’t it beautiful?”, he asks. I nod.  “The whole school was standing right here on 9/11, looking at the towers.” I can only imagine the show.

Mikael Karlsson is the music composer for the Battlefield: Bad Company games.

Last month he took me to visit the school he teaches at.
